History

The British Film Institute was founded in 1933 and at the time it was a private company, a nd it received  monies from public bodies such as the Privy Council and Treasury and continued to so until 1965.

Following the Radcliffe Report in 1948 the institute was restructured so it could concentrate on developing an appreciation of the filmic art rather simply creating films allowing control of educational film production to pass onto the National Committee for Visual Aids in Education and the British Film Academy assumed control for promoting production.

Receiving a Royal Charter in 1983, the newly-established UK Film Council took responsibility for providing the British Film Institute's government subsidy and acting, alongside the Charity Commission it became its regulator.

Today

Currently the institute is managed on a day-to-day basis by a director but ultimately, supreme decision-making authority rests with a chairman and a board of up to 14 governors.  

Currently the British Film Institute operates on three sources of income. The largest source of income for the institute comes from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the second largest source is comes from sales made in the centre. The third source of income comes from, grants and sponsorship which obtained from various sources, including National Lottery private sponsors and through donations.

The long awaited redevelopment of the National Film Theatre took place in 2007, creating in the rebranded "British Film Institute Southbank" which for the first time enabled the public to gain access, free of charge, to some of the otherwise inaccessible treasures in the National Film & Television Archive.
